Will a funeral director help my family if we want a green burial?

Check the Green Burial Council’s Interactive Maps page for the names of certified funeral directors in your area. Many funeral homes, even if they aren’t certified by the Green Burial Council, will accommodate a family’s desire for a green burial. Embalming is almost never required by state law and should not be forced on a family. If the funeral will be delayed to accommodate the arrival of out-of-town guests or an autopsy, refrigeration is generally an acceptable alternative. All funeral homes are required by federal law to accept a coffin or shroud provided by the family at no extra charge. And a wise funeral director will work to find a green burial ground in the area or a cemetery that does not require a burial vault. If the funeral home you contact is uncooperative, find another that is.
